Shetland Livestock Marketing Group, in association with Aberdeen and Northern Marts, held its first sale of the season today (Friday 2 September) at the Lerwick Marts selling prime and store lambs. Satisfactory prices and an increase in entrants have got the 2011 sales season off to a good start.

Prime lambs – 1st M Georgeson, Mailand, Sand. 2nd I Jeromson, Vindas, Laxfirth. 3rd J.A Sinclair, Sandlodge, Sandwick. 4th G Williamson, Setter, Bressay

Store lambs – 1st G.Williamson, Setter, Bressay. 2nd G Morrison, Haggersta, Whiteness. 3rd Ian Stout, Setter, Fair Isle. 4th J.A Sinclair Sandlodge, Sandwick.

Auctioneer, Rod Mackenzie said: “A total of 3,056 lambs were sold, which is an increase of 614 on last year’s first sale. The cold and wet summer has had an impact on the lambs with the quality generally down on last year, which was reflected in the prices.

Ewe lambs – 12 sold for £44.00 from Leask, Burwick, Scalloway
Store lambs – averaged at £45.65 for 137 and sold to £67.00 from Ramsay, South Collafirth, Ollaberry
Hoggets – averaged at £45.68 for nine and sold to £47.00 from Brown, 12 Sunnyside, Mid Yell
Feeding Sheep – averaged at £70 for four and sold to £94.00 from Williamson, Kerkira, Ollaberry

Store lamb – averaged at £42.44 for 99 and sold to £63.00 from Morrison, Gardersukker, Setter

Ewe lamb – averaged at £17.96 for 67 and sold to £34.00 from Leask, Burwick, Scalloway
