Shetland Livestock Marketing Group (SLMG) are pleased to be welcoming to Shetland, commercial buyer, Mr Tom Gray from Mintlaw, to judge their annual spring show of cattle. The show will be followed by a cattle and sheep sale which will be held on Wednesday 4 April 2012 at the Lerwick Marts.

Commenting on his forthcoming visit, Mr Gray said:  “I’m thrilled to have been asked to judge this event; I have purchased cattle from Shetland before but have never made it to a Lerwick sale in person, so this will be a new experience for me. The quality of livestock on the isles is very good and I’m looking forward to meeting some of the vendors from whom I’ve purchased livestock in the past.” Mr Gray also purchases quality Suffolk cross lambs for finishing at this time of year.

SLMG have been in touch with many buyers who make the regular trip to Shetland to buy cattle at this time of year, so a good attendance is expected.

The 2012 sales season has got off to a great start with an excellent sale of livestock held last week (29 February). Many of the cattle on offer made in excess of £1,000, with two bullocks from Messrs Budge, Bigton Farm realising £1,365 and £1,350. Yearling animals were selling at £1,050 and £1,100 and all the vendors were extremely happy with the results. It’s expected that the spring show and sale will continue this trend.

Another forthcoming event at Shetland Marts is a visit by Orkney based company MLM Engineering, who will be holding an open day to mark their fifth anniversary on Tuesday 20 March. Their latest range of machinery will be on show from 11.00 am, followed by an evening presentation by George Livingston from John Deere, which starts at 7.00 pm.
